Right.  First week of January (“The Worst Week of the Year”(TM)), is now over, so it’s time to get back to the gym to start fixing the ankle I busted  in November*, and cut right down on the lattes, alcohol, cheeses and delicious delicious oils (Chilli! Olive! Sesame! Mustard!) that make the Anxious life so enjoyable.  The recipe below has helped soften the blow, by being warm and tasty and filling and spicy whilst impeccably healthy and protein-heavy.  Enjoy!

Original from here.  I used cubed tofu instead of pork, but Quorn have started doing “pork steaks” if anyone wants to edge a bit closer to “real” pig.

Roast Cabbage & Sprouts with Parmesan & Smoked Paprika Sauce

Radio is blaring out Motorhead’s version of Sympathy for the Devil, and I am contemplating the sweetheart cabbage, lying forlornly in the wok wot does double duty as a vegetable bowl.  Nigel Slater to the rescue!  This was tasty and left an decent amount of parmesan sauce that I am scheming how to reuse tomorrow night…..*

*the aubergine tries quietly to sidle under the red onions, unaware that they will share its fate…..mwah hah hah….

….and Don’t Forget the Joker….

I stink of vegetable oil, and there’s a slightly suspicious (and now germolene-smeared) red mark on one arm that might possibly resemble a small hot-oil splash burn.  But such is the price of our annual New Year’s Day Chinese Food Bloody-Great Cook-Off.  Two woks, one massive saucepan, 73 bowls and dishes, garlic, ginger, soy sauce, sherry, hoi sin and sesame oil, leeks, carrots, spring onions, baby corncobs and mange tout, pork, beef and chicken pieces (plus the tofu/Quorn equivalents for myself).

And we ate the lot.

Dad’s off to try and balance that much oil against his diabetes plan, my sister is off to balance it against her diet plan, and I’m contemplating raiding the kebab van outside Tangleton train station for a bag of chips.

In the meantime may I pass on this fabulous, soul-warming recipe, which finally came together for me when I stopped trying to use yellow split lentils, and instead made it with a red lentil curry, as God and Nature intended……?
