Sasquatch Squash

Standard

In celebration of my finally managing to tie a head scarf on single-handed*, I present more soup!

Original from here: https://www.theguardian.com/lifeandstyle/2016/nov/25/winter-vegetable-soup-recipes-ribollita-squash-and-pasta-thomasina-miers, amended to sweet potato as, whilst I like squash, life is arguably too short to spend a Sunday afternoon peeling one of the frackers, even with Planet Rock’s Blues Brunch grooving on down in the background…..

*I’m sure additional arms are required somewhere.

Roast Cabbage & Sprouts with Parmesan & Smoked Paprika Sauce

Standard

Radio is blaring out Motorhead’s version of Sympathy for the Devil, and I am contemplating the sweetheart cabbage, lying forlornly in the wok wot does double duty as a vegetable bowl.  Nigel Slater to the rescue!  This was tasty and left an decent amount of parmesan sauce that I am scheming how to reuse tomorrow night…..*

*the aubergine tries quietly to sidle under the red onions, unaware that they will share its fate…..mwah hah hah….

Chestnut, Artichoke and White Bean Roast

Standard

Another one, this time a nut and bean roast.  A little luxurious with the artichoke hearts and chestnuts, perhaps one to save for a special occasion…..?

Tired, run-down, and in no great hurry to get out of bed this morning and see what the Forces of Heck have planned for me today.  Limped home after work in desperate need of something warming, wholesome, light, yet nourishing, that I can cook whilst dancing round the kitchen to Soft Cell’s “Sex Dwarf“, vodka and coke in hand.

Oh look, still got 2/3rds of a jar of miso and ginger paste.  Hmmm….

Settled on a version of the tofu and cabbage soup from the other day https://theanxiouscook.wordpress.com/2014/04/27/ich-will/, only with quorn chicken pieces and carrot slices instead.  Slung the rest of the veg into a Japanese-influenced stir-fry + some cashews for extra protein. Result.

Now, where was I? Oh yes.  “SEX DWARF. ISN’T IT NICE, LURING DISCO DOLLIES TO A LIFE OF VICE……?”

Hyderabadi dhal

Standard

Sometimes the only thing you can do is kick back, pour a drink, crank up the volume on Exile in Main Street, and throw something spicy in the direction of the stove.  This smooth and moreish dhal should do the trick….

Bring Up the Solanaceae

Standard

Say hi to the Red Hot Cayenne Chilli Peppers! Sans socks!* One brave plant produced all five of these, but at this time of year they won’t ripen due to lack of sunlight, so I picked them rather than let the plant waste further energy on them. I’m not sure how long cayenne plants live, but as they’ve made it this far would be nice to give them a chance at fruiting when there’s some proper sun going. Heard from a casual Pilipino acquaintance that they use the leaves a lot there, as well as the fruit – might have to google recipes. It hadn’t occurred to me before to try these, but then I’m cautious about experimenting with unknown bits of plants of the Nightshade family…

In between plant-wrestling I’ve knocked up a white bean bake. Enjoy.

You know, they had me at “comfort-food”.

Was alerted to the existence of this dish via the The Guardian. Apparently the Korean equivalent of Bubble & Squeak, i.e a good user-up of left-over rice and other meat and vegetable dishes, which is something I’m also a real sucker for.

(I don’t create left-overs. I create dishes with the sole intention of providing left-overs which can then be converted into the proper meal I was intending to create all along).

(Hey, it’s a hobby).

Picked up a couple of additional ideas from here.
