Rice Noodle & Vegetable Bake

Standard

A good, cheap 3-days-until-payday bake, using store cupboard staples (particularly relevant for January, the Official Month of 3-Days Till Payday).  Nothing too sophisticated but moreish and goes down well with a spot of ketchup!

FATFAL Noodles

Standard

1) RIP Rik Mayall

2) Spent Monday off work sick, and the rest of the week playing catch-up.  Tired, narked, tired-narked and thoroughly tarked-noff.   Fortunately found this recipe, which, even if you’re not hungover, ticks the boxes of quick, convenient, tasty and pleasingly messy to eat.  F**k All This For a Laugh Noodles, if you will….

“I’m Willliam the Conqueror, my enemies stood no chance…..”

Standard

I remember an episode from the British sci-fi comedy Red Dwarf, where a female character purringly offers a male character one of the greatest post-coital back-handed compliments I’ve ever heard….

“…you make love….like a Japanese meal.

Small portions.

But so many courses….”.

In this spirit, tonight’s blog consists of various Japanese-influenced yet unavoidably Anglicised dishes, given that even laying hands on some miso paste required a Viking-style ransack of half of Tangleton town centre.  Japanese egg-plants, mirin, kombu, shaoxing wine, thai basil, woodear mushrooms and other such delicacies – no chance.

However, I kid myself that I rose to the occasion with what I could scrounge, hope you enjoy these as much as I have.

(Please note that I was indeed cooking small portions of each dish, so scale up if you’re looking to make any particular one into a full meal).

First up, the soup course.  Original from here…..

Tired, run-down, and in no great hurry to get out of bed this morning and see what the Forces of Heck have planned for me today.  Limped home after work in desperate need of something warming, wholesome, light, yet nourishing, that I can cook whilst dancing round the kitchen to Soft Cell’s “Sex Dwarf“, vodka and coke in hand.

Oh look, still got 2/3rds of a jar of miso and ginger paste.  Hmmm….

Settled on a version of the tofu and cabbage soup from the other day https://theanxiouscook.wordpress.com/2014/04/27/ich-will/, only with quorn chicken pieces and carrot slices instead.  Slung the rest of the veg into a Japanese-influenced stir-fry + some cashews for extra protein. Result.

Now, where was I? Oh yes.  “SEX DWARF. ISN’T IT NICE, LURING DISCO DOLLIES TO A LIFE OF VICE……?”

Spring Clean

Standard

…well that’s the spring clean of the flat 95% done – just need to scrub the hob and clean the fridge, then no housework for another 12 months LOL.

Took a break for a nourishing noodle soup – original can be found here http://inpursuitofmore.com/2014/02/19/10-minute-meal-butternut-squash-ramen-bowl-with-rice-noodles-tofu-fresh-pea-shoots/

Tanglepore Noodles

Standard

In my search for that elusive stir-fry hit I’ve moved onto Singapore Noodles, with somewhat more success this time. This recipe incorporates both (yellow-brownish) curry powder and (virulently yellow) turmeric, so those who like to cook/eat whilst wearing white clothing, may wish to look away……..now

Pad Tangle

Standard

Monday Night Blues left me with a desire to drink a vast amount of vodka. I managed to turn right at the Alcohol Aisle though and spent the money instead on the ingredients of an over-complicated Pad Thai (complete with egg “netting”*) that was edible enough but didn’t really hit the spot. Bit of a Tofu-Dog’s Dinner as you can see:

The supermarket didn’t have any tamarind sauce, so I went with a “Tamarind & Date Chutney” as the emergency alternative, which turned out in itself to be a Thing of Great Beauty & Wonder. I’m already having tentative thoughts involving the rice-flour pancakes from the other week….

The Pad Thai did leave me with some lime juice and shallots going begging though, and I still need lunch sorting, so I had a go at http://inpursuitofmore.com/2013/01/18/recipe-red-lentil-shallot-sun-dried-tomato-hummus/, together with some pitta breads and salad.
